October is our favorite month for a number of reasons. First off, it’s THE BEST month to surf in Southern California, secondly we LOVE getting creative with DIY ocean themed Halloween costumes, AND last but obviously not least, pumpkin carving is our favorite October activity! There are SO many pumpkin carving designs out there, but we were on the hunt for ocean themed pumpkin carving designs.
Getting friends together, listening to Halloween inspired playlists, strategizing the best pumpkin carving idea, failing and then improvising, and smelling that delicious aroma of pumpkin seeds baking in the oven is what it’s all about! I recommend stenciling out your design in sharpie first before carving. Use the pumpkin guts to wipe off all the sharpie when you’re done carving- it’s the eco-friendly way to do it! We strategized so many different ocean themed pumpkin carving designs, and after a lot of indecision, we finally chose 4 to try out!

The best part about carving pumpkins is the delicious pumpkin seeds we get to gorge on for (hopefully) the rest of the week…if they last that long. Pumpkin seeds are nutritional powerhouses wrapped up in a very small package. They are filled with magnesium, protein, zinc, and antioxidants giving your health an added boost. Because we couldn’t decide if we wanted sweet or savory, we made a simple batch of each:
- Sweet batch: Cinnamon, brown sugar, and olive oil.
- Savory batch: Garlic powder, olive oil, and Lowry’s seasoning salt.
Bake both for 30 minutes at 350 degrees and enjoy!
