What You Can Expect to Find in Mission Beach
Popular with both locals and tourists, Mission Beach boasts awesome waves, flat beaches, great entertainment, and an iconic boardwalk along the sand.
Mission Beach is located on a sandbar just north of Mission Bay and just south of Pacific Beach. This wide, smooth stretch of beach is perfect for families, group gatherings, and surfers of all types. Belmont Park is located on the northern side of the beach. This area draws large crowds as the Park has roller coasters, mini golf, a wave pool, and other exciting rides right along the sand. There is also a large grassy area next to Belmont with picnic tables, bathrooms and a sizable parking lot.
The Boardwalk runs right along the sand for the entire length of the beach. This is a popular path for walkers, bikers, runners, and rollerbladers because it’s flat and the surrounding atmosphere is awesome. On one side of the path is the sand and on the other are charming townhomes, great restaurants, interesting bars, and unique shops.

What Makes Mission Beach Great for Beginners?
The long, broad beaches of Mission Beach are ideal for beginners. The waves are usually smooth and low-key. Especially in the summer, you will find many beginners and intermediate surfers out in the water. This creates an easy-going atmosphere that is great for those just getting comfortable catching waves.
The northern side of the beach is frequently more crowded because Belmont Park and more shops are located there. The south side has an even wider sand area in addition to volleyball nets and basketball courts. This area is great for those looking for a calmer vibe or just learning to stand on a surfboard.
When is the Best Time to Go?
The spacious sand on Mission Beach makes it frequently a steady surf spot despite the tides. However, mid-tide is always going to be best. This is a very dependable break so on most days there is something to ride. The waves will generally be bigger in the winter and more mellow in the summer.
