What Makes Newport Beach Great for Beginners?
Don’t be intimidated by Newport’s reputation – there are many ideal spots along its coastline for beginners. The Newport Jetties are the most consistent break in the area. Located by the Santa Ana river mouth, this area almost always has some waves. On big days, especially in the winter, this beachbreak can become a competitive shortboarding spot. In summer and on smaller days it’s mellow and perfect for beginners.
Newport Municipal Beach, also known as Newport Pier, is located on either side of the Pier, and is another great spot for learning when the waves are small. The smooth whitewater waves are awesome for individuals just learning to stand. This wide, flat beach has a large parking lot located nearby and plenty of room to hang out on the sand. This beach is a favorite for families and visitors in the summer.
When is the Best Time to Go?
Medium tide is best at the Jetties, however, this break is very dependable. Newport Pier is not especially sensitive to tide as the beach is so wide and flat. However, medium tide is always preferable. Beginner surfers can usually find waves to ride at these breaks despite the season.
