What You Can Expect to Find Surfing in Santa Monica:
Santa Monica is one of the most well-known areas in Los Angeles. The Santa Monica Pier is most notable for its iconic amusement park that draws locals and tourists alike. Fantastic beaches flank either side of the Pier with pumping waves.
Known for lots of entertainment options, fine dining, great waves, and local celebrities, Santa Monica combines the hustle-and-bustle of L.A. with the chill surf culture of Southern California beach towns.
Santa Monica State Beach is the main beach in this area. It stretches both North and South of the Pier and includes Sorrento Beach in the north section. Inkwell, another popular break, is located just south of the State beach. This area is known for the movie Dogtown where famous skateboarders and surfers surfed the Santa Monica Pier.

What Makes Santa Monica Great for Beginner Lessons?
Santa Monica is great for beginner surfers because of the wide expanse of smooth, flat beaches, and rolling waves. It is easy for beginner surfers to wade out into the water here since there aren’t big rocks. North Pier, South Pier, and Inkwell can have incredible waves when the swell is right but often have small whitewater in between swells. These conditions are ideal for a surf lesson where a beginner can work on the basic surfing skills needed to catch waves and have fun.
The family-friendly atmosphere of these beaches are also a big perk. Parking lots are available nearby, an awesome playground is located on the northern side of the beach and gymnastics equipment is located on the southern end.
Inkwell is a great beach if you are looking for a more laid-back vibe with less crowds. This is especially nice for beginners because they do not have to compete with as many people in the lineup.
When is the Best Time to Go Surfing?
Santa Monica is known for pretty consistent beach breaks. There is usually something for an experienced surfer to beginners to ride here on any given day. Crowds are something to consider, however, especially in the summer or when there is a big swell. Tide is not super important for this beach, but middle tide is always preferable.
