Sun-tanned, salty and smiling, the Encinitas locals live for the stoke of playing in the underrated vacation destination that they call home.
Surfing permeates every aspect of this San Diego County beach town. Surfboards are the favorite decor item. E-Bikes and beach cruisers (usually with surfboard racks) are the preferred method of transportation. Surf shops aplenty dot the charming downtown shop & restaurant scene. Surf vans with drippy wetsuits hanging out the back are parked by all the beaches.
Encinitas is known for some of the best waves in Southern California. Cardiff Reef, Swami’s, and San Elijo State Beach are just a few of its famous beaches. San Elijo is especially great for surf trips as it has beach-side camp sites! Locals from Del Mar and Solona Beach love to camp and go surfing here as do visitors from all over the country! D. St beach and Moonlight Beach are also very popular. Positioned on bluffs and overlooking picturesque beaches, the views from Encinitas beaches rival those of La Jolla Shores Beach or Torrey Pines. The scenery is definitely more stunning than places like Mission Beach or Pacific Beach!
Something special about this area of San Diego is that the waves are incredibly consistent and versatile. This is awesome because surfers of all skill levels have lots of opportunities to improve their technique. Encinitas has epic waves for every type of surfer – shortboarders, longboarders, novices, and experts!

Meet us in Encinitas
Our favorite spot to teach Encinitas Surf Lessons is at D St. Beach. The flat beach typically has great whitewater waves for beginners. This beach also has lifeguards present all year round and nearby bathrooms a couple blocks away at Moonlight State Beach. We also teach lessons at other spots in Encinitas – let us know if you want to learn at a different beach!
Our experienced instructors will meet you at the beach with all the surf equipment needed – surfboards & wetsuits! Before getting in the water, they will teach you about water safety, surfing technique and the basics of surfing.
As a surf school, Wavehuggers prides itself in the ability to tailor each surfing lesson to the skill level of the individual. We welcome beginners, intermediate surfers and experienced surfers too! Whether you choose private surf lessons or group lessons, the surfing knowledge and ocean safety you’ll learn will propel you to catch awesome waves!
Once you get in the water, our instructors will be right there to support you and give you tips as you go through the surf session! They will help you in real-time to develop your surfing skills. Think of them as a coach for surfing! You’ll learn how to choose a wave to catch, when and how to paddle, the correct timing for popping up and how to steer your board when surfing.
Many of Encinitas’ beaches are located by a cliff or bluff so expect stairs or a long pathway from your car to the water. Once you get down to the water, however, the beaches are flat, sandy, and gorgeous!
Our instructors will meet you at D St. Beach (or another location in Encinitas of your choice) with the gear. All you have to do is show up ready to catch waves!
