What You Can Expect to Find at Redondo Beach:
One of L.A.’s best surf breaks, Redondo Beach’s surf culture infiltrates the entire city. This quintessential beach town is popular for its exciting events, iconic Pier, amazing seafood, and epic waves.
Redondo has something for everyone. The large marina and harbor draw sailors and fishermen. World-famous restaurants and shops line the Pier and are great for those who want to stroll along the water. The Seaside Lagoon is perfect for young families with children.
The beaches offer all types of active options – volleyball, biking, paddleboarding, kayaking, and of course surfing! The beaches in this area include South Redondo Beach, Redondo County Beach, and the Redondo Breakwater.
Most of the beaches in this area are perfect for beginners. The Redondo Breakwater, in comparison, can crank out 20 foot barrels in the right winter conditions. This break is ideal for advanced shortboarders when a good swell hits. Head there on a big day to watch the action!

What Makes Redondo Beach Great for Beginners?
Redondo County Beach and South Redondo are great for beginners because they are pretty consistent breaks. The large and smooth sandy beach provides gentle waves and shallow whitewater for those still learning. Waves closer to the Pier will be slightly larger and form better.
Lifeguards cover this whole stretch of beach. Nearby parking lots and paved ramps to the beach make the trek to the sand smooth and easy! However, it can get crowded in the summer.
When is the Best Time to Go?
These breaks are pretty steady and typically have waves that surfers of many abilities enjoy. However, western swells will bring the best waves. Waves are usually bigger in the winter and smaller in the summer. Keep the crowds in mind – you’ll want to get there early on a summer day to get parking and claim your spot in the sand!
