4 Benefits of Learning a New Hobby

While your New Year’s resolution might be starting to wear thin, learning a new hobby is an exciting, easy-to-commit-to activity where you can reap many rewards. Here are just a few benefits of learning a new hobby:

Decreases Depression

Hobbies, especially active and outdoor ones, are exceptional at boosting your mood. They give you something to look forward to and are a great way to clear your mind. Nature is a refreshing, peaceful space to get off the screens and be creative. Studies show that participation in these types of hobbies are “correlated with higher levels of positive psychosocial states and lower levels of depression and negative [emotions]”.

Benefits of learning a new hobby: confidence

Builds Community

Friendships grow and strengthen through the bond of shared experiences. In learning a new hobby, you’re automatically introduced to new types of people via the team, class or group that you learn with. Medical professionals say that community is the key to strong mental health. This quality time spent challenging yourselves and having fun together facilitates dynamic, lasting friendships.

Increases Physical Agility

Active hobbies, such as hiking, biking, sports, or surfing are a great way to get in shape! It’s so much more exciting than going to the gym, but often has similar results such as increasing your strength and coordination. One study showed that people who regularly participated in active hobbies typically had “lower blood pressure, total cortisol, waist circumference, and body mass index, and perceptions of better physical function”.
