What Makes Hermosa Great for Beginners?
Hermosa Pier, North and South, is a perfect area for beginners to get comfortable catching waves. One of L.A.’s best beaches, it is flat, wide and sandy. This is a pretty consistent beach break. While it can get chest-high to double overhead in the right conditions, but it usually has small, mellow waves. This beach provides good whitewater for those just learning to stand on the board.
Bathrooms, parking lots, volleyball courts, and lots of sand make this a great beach for events as well as families.

Hermosa’s beaches are best at low to medium and rising tide. This steady break will often have something for beginners to ride. However, check the surf report and possibly the event calendar. In the summer, the already crowded beaches can become absolutely packed during events. The winter months will often have emptier beaches and larger waves.
